Debate Returns Home from Dallas Victorious

The Columbus Debate Society flew out to Dallas for the 34th annual Grapevine Classic this past weekend. Texas is home to the most competitive circuit in the country, and the invitational featured 20 of the top 100 schools in the nation.

That is why it is no small feat for our young debate program, ranked 232nd nationally by comparison, to take home multiple awards.
  • The team of Joseph Alonso and James Sacher took first in JV Public Forum
  • Matthew Moreno took second in JV Lincoln-Douglas, going 11-3 across all judge ballots
  • Joseph Alonso took top speaker award for his event, James placed 4th
  • Nicholas Diaz took third best speaker in JV Lincoln-Douglas
Additionally, the rest of the team performed well and were one win away from advancing to the elimination stage:
  • Alan Munschy and Nicholas Gonzalez in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas
  • Martin Seals, Benjamin Corral, and Bruno Barreiro in World Schools
  • Sebastian Santana and Sven Stumbauer in Extemporaneous Speaking
