Christopher Columbus High School is proud to provide on-site care for all student athletes. The school employs two full-time Certified Athletic Trainers who assist in managing the overall health and wellness of our student-athletes. Br. Herb Baker has 25 years of experience and manages a number of Student Athletic Trainers who work directly with the full-time Certified Athletic Trainers to enhance the mission of the Sports Medicine Department. In doing so, the goal is to educate these students to better serve not only the student-athletes, but the Student Athletic Trainer’s future endeavors.
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians and are trained in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from athletic activity. Christopher Columbus High School’s Certified Athletic Trainers provide the following services:
- Evaluation and assessment of injuries and conditions resulting from athletic activity
- Immediate care of injuries resulting from athletic activity
- Rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries resulting from athletic activity
- Organization and administration
- Professional development and responsibility
Equipment onsite includes muscle simulators, ultrasound machines, whirlpools and portable water tanks. Earlier this years, CCHS was named a "Safe Sports School 1
st Team" by the
National Athletic Trainers' Association.
Training Room Hours
The Athletic Training Room is open from 7 to 8 am on school days, and then reopens at 2 pm and stays busy through 6 pm. Student-athletes are held accountable for getting to the training room for care 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the start of scheduled practices and games. Weekend and holiday hours are determined based on practices/games that are held on those days.
During both home and away games, Certified Athletic Trainers will be on-hand for injury evaluations, treatments and any other needs that should arise.
