Retreats

Relationship with God

Retreats are a voluntary – but essential - part of the Explorer experience. Retreats allow us to step out of our daily routine, reflect on our lives, grow closer to classmates, and deepen our relationship with God. Decades later, alumni speak fondly and enthusiastically about their Columbus retreat experiences.

  • Kerygma [Retreat for Students in Grade 9]

Kerygma is "the Good News," of Jesus Christ. This overnight retreat offers participants the opportunity to discover Jesus through talks, small group discussions, scripture, prayer, games, and activities. Themes include relationships, healing, personal call, morality, and the example of Saint Marcellin Champagnat.

Participants will be challenged to proclaim the Good News in their daily lives: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt 28:19-20).”

This life that I live now, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me.”

  • The Encounter [Retreat for Students in Grades 11 & 12]

Inaugurated in 1968 at the Marist Brothers Center in Esopus, New York, the Encounter is a unique Marist contribution to youth ministry in the United States. Many of the Catholic youth retreat programs used in schools and dioceses across the country are variations on this original Marist Brothers innovation. The Encounter has been a significant life experience for generations of Columbus students.

An adaptation of the Cursillo for adults, the Encounter is a two-and-a-half-day retreat that invites participants to a deeper and more mature relationship with themselves, with others, and with God. Through a series of peer- and adult-facilitated experiences (talks, discussions, prayer, activities) and the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, participants come to a fuller awareness that they and others are created in the image of a loving God and are called to follow Jesus Christ as the way, the truth, and the life.
