Hellions Finish Strong at FSU Invitational

Over the weekend, the Cross Country team traveled to Tallahassee to race at the FSU Invitational.
The 16 boys that made the trip were rewarded with amazing racing weather on an exceptional course.

The Varsity boys raced at 7:30 am on Saturday with temperatures in the high 50s/low 60s.  As the race went off, Chris Ivonnet, Adrian Bichara, Malcolm Brown, Donato Scarcello, Nick Ivonnet, and Alvaro Canarte came through the first mile between 4:52 and 5:04.  As the 2nd mile unfolded, the boys settled into their racing pace at around 5:25.  The 3rd mile saw the lead packs thin out while our boys kept their foot on the gas.  When the raced finished, the Hellions had 6 runners in the top 25.  They all came in within 33 seconds of each other and had a team average of 16:17. Chris Ivonnet led the boys by running the 5k distance in 15:56 (5:05 average). This is the team's best performance in a decade!  As a result of this performance, the boys have asserted themselves as legitimate contenders for the state title in early November.

Two individual side notes from this race: Freshman Alejandro Romagosa continues to make massive improvements.  He improved by nearly a minute on last weeks’ time with his impressive 17:11 5k personal best.  Marcus Mata also ran under 17 minutes for his first time.

The JV boys also made the trek up to Tallahassee with only 48-hour notice. They were put into a race of other varsity teams but stepped up to the challenge and finished 2nd.  They were led up front by Brenden "Turbo" Ruiz and Giovanni Armas who both ran under 18 minutes.  They were followed closely behind by Andrew Nunez, Nico Trujillo, Fr. Danny Garcia, Lucas Castilla, Alex Bartra, and Mike Alvarez who all ran sub 19 minute 5ks.
