Senior Debaters Advance to Elimination Rounds

Over the weekend, the Columbus Debate Team competed at the 34th annual University of Florida - Blue Key Tournament.

Our team seniors, Daniel de Izaguirre and Angel Toro had a great tournament, finishing with a 4-2 record in preliminary rounds before advancing to the double octafinals in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate. Unfortunately, due to seeding, Danny and Angel had to face each other in the bracket and Angel was coached over due to being the higher seed. In the octafinal round, Angel lost a close debate on a 2-1 decision. Angel also had a great pre-tournament, representing Columbus in the Lincoln Douglas Round Robin.

Also having a great tournament in Lincoln-Douglas, sophomore Albert Sanchez and junior Jesus Capo finished with 3-3 records, ending 1 win away from elimination rounds. The rest of the LD squad in attendance included Javier Hernandez in varsity, and newcomers Ryan Yglesias, Charles Gannon, and Carlos Gutierrez representing the Explorers in the novice division. The students were debating the topic: Wealthy nations have an obligation to provide development assistance to other nations. Thank you coach Ciocca for working with the LD debaters and helping them throughout the weekend.

Blue Key also marked the return of the Columbus Policy Debate program to a national tournament in over a decade. We had three teams competing in a collapsed novice/varsity division. The novice team of Andrew Castro and Branden Ruiz came off with a big win against Ft. Lauderdale High School, who later closed out the tournament in finals. Also competing in policy debate we had the teams of Andres Perez and Marcos Ortega, and Sebastian Lasaga and Gabriel Lafee. In policy debate, the students were advocating for the changing of the Title I formula to solve for societal inequity through public schooling.

We will be hosting our next tournament here at Columbus, after school on Tuesday, November 14th
