Environmental Club Participates in Coastal Cleanup

Calling all Columbus Explorers - Join the world’s largest volunteer effort for our oceans by participating in Ocean Conservancy’s 32nd annual International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 16th, 2017.

This year, there will be 45+ cleanup sites throughout Miami-Dade county.

Miami-Dade’s participation in this global event is presented by Covanta and organized by VolunteerCleanup.org, with additional support from the City of Miami Beach and Miami Beach Rising Above.

In 2016, more than 18 million pounds of trash were collected by over 500,000 volunteers worldwide during the International Coastal Cleanup. Here in Miami-Dade, we gathered and removed 111,000 items amounting to nearly 15,000 pounds of marine debris with 2,600 volunteers on this single day of service. Let’s do even better this year!

Volunteers at ICC actively participate in a unique global citizen science project. Not only will they be removing marine debris, but they will also catalog and tally what they find using the Ocean Conservancy’s data collection cards or Clean Swell App. The resulting item-by-item, location-by-location Ocean Trash Index that Ocean Conservancy compiles each year provides the only global snapshot of the marine debris littering coasts and waterways around the world and helps to inform educational campaigns and policy.

We need your help to keep this momentum going.  Signup and help spread the word!
