Columbus Preps for National Day of Service

On March 29, 2017, all the Marist schools in the United States will participate in community service in honor of the Marist Brothers’ 200th anniversary.

This event has been chosen as the cornerstone experience for our young people in the USA Province as a memorable way for them to engage in the Marist Brothers Bicentennial celebration for two reasons: First, by offering this as the most important event for them it clearly teaches them that our mission as Marists is centered on “Love of Service” and in particular to the least favored. We are showing them that this value of service is so important to us as Marists that it is worthy of an entire school day. Second, we are trusting and empowering our young people to be the ones who will determine how our Province responds through this event in significantly impacting the lives of the most needy. Our young people will vote to determine how $200,000 is dispersed to various International Marist Projects. This aspect of the day allows each of our young people to clearly realize that not only will they be helping people in need on a local level, but they are capable of bringing about significant change in the wider Marist world.

Columbus will be providing service in a variety of ways in our local community, including:
  • We have students going to His House, which houses both local and international kids in crisis. Our students will be organizing and leading activities for the children as well as helping beautify the facilities.
  • Our football team is hosting a field day on our campus for some of the students of His House
  • Our students will be providing their services for a lake cleanup at Tropical Park, which hosts many of our athletic events and is a major park in our area.
  • Students will be preparing bagged lunches that are being provided to families in need as determined by some local parishes.
  • Students will be engaged with elderly rehab patients in 1:1 service at Floridean Healthcare.
  • Students will be writing letters to deployed servicemen and women (we have a Patriot Club which will place these)
