25 Seniors Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program

Christopher Columbus High School is proud to announce that 25 Explorers have earned recognition in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program for their outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test).

Columbus would also like to congratulate the NMSP Semifinalists: Michael Berry, Holt Boink, Jared Coleman and Albert Sanchez, as well as the Commended Students and those who were recognized by the National Hispanic Recognition Program. The faculty and staff at Columbus deserve credit for the tremendous job they do in preparing the students for these rigorous exams.

The semifinalists were announced on Wednesday, and include 16,000 high school seniors that will go on to compete for the scholarships offered next spring. According to a National Merit Scholarship Program press advisory, more than 90% of the semifinalists will be named as finalists for the scholarship. Of those finalists, about half will win a scholarship.

More than 1.5 million students applied for the highly competitive scholarship and the semifinalists represent less than 1% of all high-school seniors in the U.S. For each state, the number of semifinalists is proportional to that state's percentage of the total graduating seniors in the country, officials explained.
