Debate Team Takes 3rd at Berkeley

After a long weekend of debating, the Debate Team had a spectacular tournament at the 46th Annual Cal Invitational at UC Berkeley.

All four debaters competing walked away with winning records and we had two students make it to elimination rounds finishing in 3rd and 11th place respectively in a pool of 147 students from 18 states.

Leading the way for the Explorers, juniors Andrew Castro and Albert Sanchez had a great run in Lincoln Douglas debate through preliminary rounds and each finished with a 5-1 preliminary record. Going into elimination rounds, Andrew was the 8th seed overall while Albert was 21st. Sophomore Pedro Portela was 4-2 and missed elimination rounds by .08 averaged speaker points finishing 35th overall. Both Andrew and Albert won their double-octafinal round. Albert lost on a close decision in octofinals, finishing 11th, while Andrew knocked out the top undefeated seed at the tournament before his loss to the tournament champion in semifinals. Throughout elimination rounds, Andrew and Albert knocked out competitors from Isidore Newman (LA), Loyola (CA), Athens (MI), and Davis (UT). Senior Jesus Capo had a 3-3 record and had some strong wins throughout the tournament.

The team next competes this Friday at Belen for the National Qualifier in Student Congress. Our squad’s next big competition will be the state championship March 2nd and 3rd at West Broward High School. We qualified 12 students this year to the state championship in Lincoln Douglas and Policy debate.
