Summer 2019

Academic Assignments

Requirements

All Christopher Columbus High School students are required to participate in the school-wide Summer Reading program. The purpose of this program is to encourage reading, not just for all of its academic and learning benefits, but to help our Explorers discover that reading can be a meaningful and pleasurable activity. To the right are all the reading requirements broken down by class and academic path. Most works are MANDATORY for that course, although some courses will allow students to select one of the options given.

Students are expected to complete their reading requirement by the first day of class in August. At that time, teachers will assess each student through an in-class, timed essay. Students should bring their text(s) (etext or hardbound) to class on the first full day of school in August.

Do note that there are selections required by the English, Science and Social Studies departments.

  • AP Physics 1 (Mr. Sanchez)

Advanced Placement Physics is a rigorous science course that requires exceptional proficiency in algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. For this summer assignment, students will complete a problem set on mathematical skills needed for success in AP physics.

Your Work: It is essential that you show all of your work to support your mathematical responses. If you only provide answers, you will get NO credit.

Academic Honesty: Do your own work! There are differences between working together, getting help, and copying. Make sure that you are clear on these differences as well as the school policies concerning cheating and plagiarism.

To contact me during the summer: If you have any questions for me, feel free to email me at rsanchez@columbushs.com. Be sure to put “AP Physics 1” in the subject matter, and make sure you put your first and last name on it somewhere so I know from whom I’m receiving it.

The goal of the summer assignment is to sharpen the math skills needed for AP Physics 1 and cover some of the material in chapter 1 of the book we will be using in class: Physics Principles with Applications, Douglas C. Giancoli, 7th AP Edition.

The work should be completed over the course of the summer. The following resources should be reviewed prior to working the summer assignment. Additional resources may be used to refresh your math and trigonometry skills.

A hardcopy of the assignment will be due the second day of school. It will be graded and will serve as your first grade of the course. Students will also take a test on this same material during the first week of classes. A passing grade of 90% or higher will be required. Anyone receiving a lower grade will be assigned additional review material.

Students interested in getting a leg up on the course material are encouraged (but not required) to view the first 5 Kahn Academy videos from the link below:
