Calling the Marist Family to Participate in #MillionMarists Social Media Campaign on January 2, 2017
Wednesday, December 21, 2016

The year 2017 will be an important one for the Marist family worldwide as we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Marist Brothers religious order.  It was on January 2, 1817 that Saint Marcellin Champagnat founded the congregation of brothers that would devote themselves to education, faith, and service, in the way of Mary.
As we quickly approach the Bicentennial Anniversary on January 2nd, 2017, our Superior General in Rome, Br. Emili Turu, has asked that the entire Marist world utilize hashtag “#MillionMarists” that day across all social media platforms in order to make our Bicentennial celebration a world-wide trending event.

We invite and encourage our Columbus Marist family: students, parents, faculty, alumni, and alumni parents to share a picture with one or more fellow Marists on your social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) with “#MillionMarists” and help us show the world how Marcellin Champagnat’s dream is alive 200 years later.  You could also share an old picture of your favorite Marist moment.  To view  examples, visit #MillionMarists.

Thank you for all that you do to carry out our Marist mission

Students Serve at LaValla Experience, NY
Thursday, October 15, 2015

Working to recapture the spirit and excitement of the early days of the Marist Institute, the LaValla Weekend Experience was served by youth and adults from Marist schools in the United States.  The students experienced the early days of the brothers at LaValla: living in community, prayer, and service at the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus.  The program began four years ago; the the Chapel in the Woods and the Peace Plaza were built. This year, a labyrinth was constructed at MBCE, residents were served at Chiz’s Heart Street, as well as other projects were throughout MBCE.  Youth and adult Marists assist in bringing the spirit of the Hermitage in France alive; they exhibited faith, generosity of service, ability to reflect and share ideas, and strived to know and love Jesus.

Thank you to our Alumni CEOs who Participated in Columbus Connects
Friday, October 09, 2015

Four alumni CEOs participated in the Columbus Connects Leadership Lecture Series on October 8th:  Carlos Rodriguez, President & CEO of ADP, Inc. (Fortune #251), Robert Sanchez, Chairman & CEO of Ryder System, Inc. (Fortune #407), Jose Mas, President and CEO of MasTec Inc. (Fortune #562) and Luis de la Aguilera, President & CEO of TotalBank (a subsidiary of Banco Popular Español, S.A. - the fourth largest banking group in Spain).  The panel discussion was modereated by alum Jorge Ortega,  executive vice-president and managing director of Burson-Marsteller, and was attended by approximately 250 people, made up of mostly alumni.  The CEOs spoke about leadership strategies, business trends, and shared many memories about Columbus.

We recenlty learned some amazing facts.  If Columbus were a college, it would rank in the Top 20 in the 2015 Best “Most Fortune CEO Graduates” report, alongside universities such as Princeton and Purdue.  Columbus may be the only high school in America to have three Fortune CEOs among its alumni base.  “It is highly unlikely for a high school to have one Fortune 500 company CEO in its ranks, let alone three,” said Menachem Wecker, former education reporter for U.S. News & World Report.

Eddie Pozo Honored at South Miami Commission for his Pozo Brother Book Club
Monday, September 21, 2015

Congratulations to Eddie Pozo ('16) who was awarded with a commendation at the City of South Miami commission meeting held on September 15, 2015 for his work with the Pozo Brother Book Club that he started as a freshman.  He is pictured above with Phillip Stoddard, the Mayor of the City of South Miami.

Eddie started the club "to pass on a love of reading" to young students.  He applied for a grant every year  through the Dade Reading Council which covers the cost of the books.  His Book Club, made up of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders, meets every Wednesday from January to May at the South Miami Community Center. The children each take turns reading a couple of pages out loud. Eddie helps correct pronunciation and helps to define unfamiliar terms. After a few chapters the children enjoy a healthy snack brought in by Eddie and engage in book discussion. "The kids  are all clamoring to get a chance to read. We have strict rules for respecting whoever is reading. No one is allowed to interrupt or laugh at a mispronunciation. We want everyone to feel free to take a chance," said Eddie.

Eddie also interns every summer for Ileana Rod-Lehtinen, works at Publix, and plays varisty football.  He lead Encounters through campus ministry and coaches his little borther's flag football team.

Joseph Corderi Wins Silver Knight in Business; Tyler Anderson Receives Honorable Mention
Thursday, May 21, 2015

Columbus is proud to announce that Joseph Corderi (’15) has won a Miami Herald Silver Knight, one of our nation’s most highly regarded awards that recognizes the “record of service to school and community” of  our area’s academically high achieving students.  Joseph won in the Business category and was presented with the award on May 20, 2015 at a special ceremony.  Tyler Anderson ('15) was also recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Speech category.

As a Marist Brothers school that emphasizes a love for service to others, we are especially proud that this is the fourth Silver Knight awarded to a Columbus student in the last two years.  This also marks the second year in a row that Columbus is the only Miami-Dade Catholic school to bring one home.  Last year, Columbus won three Silver Knights (more than any other private or Catholic school in Miami-Dade County).

Congratulations to Joseph, Tyler, and all the 2015 Columbus Silver Knight Award nominees.  We also congratulate Mrs. Sylvie Galvez-Cuesta who coordinates the Silver Knight nominees at Columbus on a wonderful job.

About Joseph Corderi:
Joseph  saw firsthand how hard it is to get back on your feet once you lose your home: When his best friend’s family was evicted, it took them more than three years to find stable housing. That’s why, besides donating his time building homes with Habitat for Humanity and raising money for the organization, he tapped his school’s alumni community and started Suit Up Miami. The program collects formal attire, has it washed and pressed, and donates the clothes to homeless shelters in hopes of getting employers to hire indigent applicants. If you would like to donate a suit to his organization, please contact Mrs. Sylvie Galvez-Cuesta at

A founding member of his school’s FBLA chapter, Joseph is also an AP Scholar with Honor; a UC Berkeley National Debate Tournament winner; a National Honor Society tutor; and a volunteer with Shake-a-Leg Miami, the Humane Society and the Angel Tree Project.

Drama Troupe Rated Excellent in District's One Act Theater Competition
Wednesday, October 29, 2014

For the first time, our Drama Troupe participated in our district's One Act Theater Festival Competition, one of the most intense competitions in our district where less than half of schools participate.  Students perform a one act play in an unfamiliar theater within a 40 minute period to include set-up and take-down.  Once the time starts, it is completely student-run.

Out of the hundredes of students and the 23 schools that competed, Columbus scored an Excellent (the second highest award offered).  Columbus is now on the map as a competitive school for One Acts!

Roger Torres won the All Star Cast Award - one of the most prestigious individual awards in One Act competition.  It is given to the actors who the judges believe are the most talented on the stage.

Friday, October 10, 2014

The Castaways Against Cancer, an organization founded by Columbus alumnus and long-time teacher Steve O'Brien after the loss his mother and grandmother to cancer in 1999, has become the number one fundraising relay team in the State of Florida for the Amercian Cancer Society, surpassing 8,914 other teams. The castaways are a crew of kayakers made up of serveral Columbus faculty members and alumni that paddle annually from Miami to Key West to raise money for the ACS.  Since their inaugural voyage in 2000, they have helped raise more than $612,000.  Their goal is to not only find a cure for cancer by raising money, but to honor those who have fought the good fight.  Their motto is  "we kayak, you donate and we all pray for a cure."

Congratulations to the Castaways!  The Columbus family is proud of you!

The CCHS teachers and alumni that have kayaked for a cure are:  Steve O'Brien, Robert Linfors, Dave Isenberg, Adam Scholer, Eric Pino, Sandy Valdez, Patrick Linfors, and Lou de la Aguilera  who is a major sponsor of the Castaways through his company TotalBank.  View the Castaways Against Cancer Website
