BBall Wins District 15-7A Championship

A little over 2 weeks ago, the varsity basketball team took home the Greater Miami Athletic Conference championship. On Friday night, the Explorers (24-2) added to their hardware, winning the District 15-7A Championship, beating Miami High 82-61 at Doral Academy's gym.

The Explorers put up 26 - 2nd quarter points to open up a 28 point halftime lead on Miami High. Given the team’s defensive prowess all season, that's as close to an insurmountable halftime lead as there is, but Miami High never quit, putting up an impressive 29 4th-quarter points.

Yet even that effort left Miami High 21 points short when the final buzzer went off.

The Boozer brothers had exactly half of the Explorer's total output (41 points; 22 from Cayden and 19 from Cameron), but it was a cohesive team effort at both ends of the floor, hustle, ball screens, motion, movement, rebounding, assists, anticipation and always looking ahead to the next pass.

Sophomore Malik Abdullahi had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Garyn Bess, a rock-steady performer all season, had 8 points, 4 assists, took 2 charges and was a catalyst on 4 defensive gems.

To go with his 19 points, Cameron added 12 rebounds. Cayden had 5 rebounds and 5 assists to go with his 22 points.

The win gives Columbus its first District Championship since 2011, the year they last went to Lakeland.
