Columbus Debate Had An Historic Weekend

"Don't Mess With Texas" Or so the saying goes...

Nobody told that to James Sacher, who didn't just mess with Texas, but outright dominated his opponents at the University of Houston's Cougar Classic. James was undefeated in prelims 5-0, and went 10-1 across all judge ballots enroot to first place in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Division. It has been six years since CCHS took home a first place finish in a national bid tournament (Javi Navarrette).

While the Explorers had planned on traveling to Houston, Omicron forced the tournament online. That did not slow us down. Aside from James' success, Matthew Moreno, Martin Seals, and Joseph Alonso were all Semi-Finalists in their respective divisions. Victor Barreda was a surprise finalist in Congress despite stepping in to debate on short notice. Sebastian Santana, Lucas Salazar, Sven Strumbauer and Lucas Rivera all finished in the top half in their divisions.

Lastly, the World Schools Team of Mathew Calviño, Bruno Barreiro, Nicholas Diaz, and Marcelo Andreu, who went .500 against the nation’s top competition - Texas his home to 83 out of the top 100 debaters in World Schools. Marcelo Andreu has moved up to 84th in the nation in that format.

This upcoming weekend debate will split in two. Many debaters will compete in the Catholic Forensic League this Saturday, while 6 debaters will join their 5 other Model UN teammates and head up to Gainesville on Friday to compete all weekend long.
