Debate Society Finds Success in Mississippi

The Columbus Debate Society returned Sunday from Oxford, Mississippi. It was the team's first trip since the Presidents Day weekend of 2020 - 20 months!

The team had a wonderful time in Mississippi and were happy to meet up with Henry Parish Jr. ‘20 Thursday night to wish him good luck during his game versus Tennessee (he had 10 carries for 41 yards and 5 receptions for 19 yards in the win).

Blessed with wonderful success in the competition that featured some of  the top schools in the South, every Explorer but one advanced to quarterfinals or better. The student who did not had arguably a more impressive feat: Ben Corral, a novice, had to be moved up to varsity on late notice and held a record of 3-1 in preliminaries in the varsity Lincoln-Douglas division.

The following Explorers took third place in their first ever in person competition:

Bruno Barreiro - Extemporaneous Speaking
Martin Seals & Joseph Alonso - Novice Public Forum

The following students made Finals (top 15) in Student Congress:
Jorge Cereceda & Frank Kowalski

The following students broke to semi-finals in extemporaneous speaking:

Mathew Calviño, Nicholas Diaz, and Basillio Paneque.

Lastly, our World Schools teams finished in second and third place.
