8 to State for Wrestling Team

Join us in congratulating the eight Explorer wrestlers that will advance on to the FHSAA Class 3A State Championship this coming weekend in Kissimmee, Florida.

Our grapplers did our school proud by battling hard for a 3- day period, facing off against wrestlers from 27 teams. There were a total of 278 competitors from Miami-Dade and Broward in the Region 4- 3A Tournament at Coral Park.

At the end of the grueling contest, our team finished 3rd overall and had the third most boys advance behind Southwest and South Dade.

Chip Guzman won the 106 lb. championship while teammate Derrick Hart finished 2nd at heavyweight. The coaching staff decided to forfeit Hart’s finals match as a precautionary measure in order to rest a minor injury for this weekend’s state competition.

Gavin Buck 132 lbs., Guy Toussaint 170 lbs., and Daniel Van Arman 195 lbs. all finished 3rd and received bronze medals for the program. Dylan Mira 145 lbs., Rocco D’Ascoli 160 lbs. and Joshua Márquez 182 lbs. battled to a 4th place finish in their 16-man bracket and punched in a state ticket. Unfortunately Rocco D’Ascoli suffered a match ending injury and was also forced to forfeit.

Coaches Jacob Grant and Andes González should be commended for their outstanding job during this stressful but rewarding experience.
