Explorers Operate Radio Telescope

Earlier this week, the Columbus astronomy students learned science by doing science.

They took turns taking control of DSS28, an 850,000 lbs, 34-meter radio telescope at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in Fort Irwin, CA.

Today's students focused on the Black Hole Patrol campaign which involves the collection of data on these objects and laying the groundwork for meaningful analysis and research.

Deep Space Station 28 (DSS28) is part of the Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) program that allows students and teachers in schools across the globe to operate a 34 meter (112 foot) radio telescope from the classroom. Partnered with scientists and other observatories from around the world, students do real research and exploration.

The GAVRT Project is jointly managed by the Lewis Center for Educational Research and the Deep Space Network (DSN) Science Office of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
