Debaters Take on College Teams en Español

The Columbus Debate Society hosted and competed in the first ever Spanish Language Debate scrimmage online.

Our students were the only high school students in attendance and competed against college debaters from Cornell, Universidad de Central Venezuela, University of North Georgia, Cal Poly, Cape Cod Community College, and Willamette University. Not only did our students hold their own, they actually won a round, received a top speaker award, and finished in 2nd place overall!

Columbus was represented by a team of three courageous sophomores; Jan Andretta, Marcelo Andreu, and Hans Bendixen. Round one the boys were paired up against teams from Cornell and North Georgia and earned a first place ranking for the round! Marcelo Andreu was also recognized as the top speaker of the tournament. Round 2 the boys finished with a 3rd place ranking against two teams from Cornell and one team from Cape Cod, earning them an overall 2nd place finish

The topics the students debated were:
Round 1: Esta casa lamenta la popularidad de música de baile electrónica (EDM)
(This house regrets the popularity of Electronic Dance Music)
Round 2: Esta casa daría prioridad a la exploración del espacio sideral sobre la exploración de aguas profundas.
(This house would prioritize deep space exploration over deep sea exploration)
