Varsity Wrestling Competes in District 16 Duals

The Varsity Wrestling Team participated in the newly formed District 16 Dual Meet Tournament held this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday at South Dade Senior High School.

The duals featured several teams from around the state, as well as all Columbus’ district opponents.
 
After the grueling 3-day event and 13 matches, the Columbus Wrestling Team came away with 9 wins and 4 losses and no major injuries to report. On Thursday, the team defeated Coral Gables 60-18, Coral Reef 68-15, Braddock 66-18 and Ferguson 54-24. Friday, the team also opened up with two tough matches against South Dade (defending State Champs) and lost 57-12, followed by Southwest 53-9.
 
The team finished the day with victories over Palmetto 54-30, Hollywood Hills 65-0 and Southridge 56-31.
 
The opening match on Saturday was against Jacksonville Fleming Island (last year’s state runner up and current #2 ranked team). While hard-fought, the Explorers fell short 58-18.
 
Chip Guzman (106 lbs.) went 11-2, Gavin Buck (126 lbs.) went 11-2 and Dylan Mira (138 lbs.) went 12-1 for the Explorers. The team next competes at Lyman High School in Orlando this Friday and Saturday in the Bill Scott Memorial Christmas Invitational.
