Debaters Host Workshop for MDCPS

The Columbus Debate Society started off its year by hosting a workshop for students of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

One hundred and twenty students from a dozen middle and high schools got a chance to participate in ten different debate workshop sessions, staffed by our very own varsity debaters. The workshop helps kick-off this year's Miami-Dade After School Tournament league, which Columbus helped co-found along with G. Holmes Braddock High School four years ago. Since its inception, the league has held tournaments providing low cost opportunities for students to learn advocacy and communication skills in competitive debate tournaments.

Albert Sanchez ('20) - Lincoln Douglas Debate
Zakk Gilley, Matthew Monroy, & Gabriel Llerena ('21) - Public Forum Debate
Dennis Ramos ('20) - Big Questions Debate
Emmanuel Cartelle & Kyle Cominsky ('21) - Informative and Original Oratory
Ryan Yglesias ('20) - Extemporaneous Speaking
Alex La Roz ('21) - Student Congressional Debate

The Debaters have their first local competition this Thursday at G. Holmes Braddock High School and then the varsity team has its first competition in two weeks at the Holy Cross Tournament in New Orleans.
