Jersey of Fallen Explorer Ortiz ’18 Retired

Head Cross Country coach Eric Pino held a special moment before the King of the Hill 5K race to retire the No. 35 jersey of Sebastian Ortiz ’18 and present it to his parents.

With Rose and Oscar ‘88 on hand as well as Sebastian’s brother Luke ‘21, Coach Pino presented the Ortiz family with Sebastian’s framed jersey. The family then addressed the audience about their son, his legacy, and their foundation - SebastianStrong.

Sebastian’s jersey will now hang in the Wellness Center with the four other retired uniforms of Explorers that passed away during their time at Columbus.

Oscar summed it up well by writing: #35, our beautiful Sebastian, will never be retired in our souls, in our hearts. But I can think of no one more worthy of the honor that retiring a number stands for than Sebs. Focused, compassionate, kind, encouraging, never give up with the most spectacular smile Sebs. Columbus will always be able to speak of the young man who lit up their hallways with love and loyalty. Leaving a legacy that changed us all for the better - all the while the gaping hole in our hearts remains empty. We will never be the same without him but we are forever grateful that he chose to touch our lives. ~R.R.
