Track Team Wins Back to Back State Titles

The Columbus Track & Field Team traveled to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville to compete at the FHSAS Class 4A State Championships.

After qualifying Cameron Daniel and Xzavier Henderson in the 400m Friday, rain cut short competition for the rest of the events to be held that afternoon. To start out Saturday’s finals, Nicholas Aixala, Kevin Kergean, Malcolm Brown and Sebastien Cantave finished 2nd in the 4x800 with a season best 7:54.71, scoring 8 team points. Almost simultaneously, senior Gary Cooper finished in 5th place in shot put for 4 team points. Henderson, a junior, followed up with a state title in the 400m with a time of 46.77 (a new school record). Daniel, a senior, finished in 4th place, combining for 15 team points in one event.

Trailing Flagler Palm Coast by 6 team points heading into the 200m, Henderson and Daniel finished 2nd and 5th respectively to score 12 team points and put the Explorers up by 6.

With the 4x400m remaining and a 6-point lead, Cantave, Henderson, Courtney Holmes and Daniel ran a season 2nd best 3:16.71 to finish 3rd and clinch a second consecutive state championship for Columbus. As a team, the Explorers finished with 45 points, ahead of second place Flagler Palm Coast with 41.

Also, competing for the Explorers at the state meet were Tristan Dodge (High Jump) and Elijah Roberts (Shot Put).
