Rising Stars Awards Highlights Explorers

On February 5, 2019, Columbus hosted the Rising Stars Awards ceremony, recognizing those outstanding individuals involved with Step Up’s Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program.

Four Columbus seniors were honored at the event as well as educator, Jeanette Gonzalez-Rojas, who was presented with the Exceptional Teacher Award. Learn more about Columbus' 2019 Rising Stars below:

Mrs. Jeanette Gonzalez-Rojas comes from a family of educators. Her paternal grandfather was a school principal, paternal grandmother was a teacher, and her mother worked as a math tutor and teacher. One could say teaching is in her blood.

Throughout her 20 years of teaching, Mrs. Gonzalez-Rojas has earned the reputation of being “the teacher who can make the most reluctant of learners want to succeed in the classroom”.  Being able to connect with the most difficult and challenging students is a gift she possesses.

Gregorio Joa
transferred into Christopher Columbus High School his junior year to expand his knowledge base and create more opportunities for himself. As a lead member of the Christopher Columbus High School band, Gregorio has participated in many concerts, events and competitions. Gregorio was one of hundreds of high school musicians to receive an outstanding solo award in a competition held in California.

Matthew De Abreu
is a dynamic student and athlete. His commitment in both arenas is evident. Matthew has been an active member of the Christopher Columbus High School football team all four years of his high school career. Although Matthew dedicated several hours to his football team throughout the year, he has managed to be an academic star as well. With a total of 11 Honors classes and 2 Advanced Placement classes, Matthew has worked hard and achieved a 3.86 GPA. He has been a member of the French Club for the past four years and an active member of the Squires Club for three years.

Looking at the list of courses Jaime Diaz Moreno has taken during his high school years, and his impressive 4.8 GPA, it is hard to believe he learned to speak, read and write the English language only five years ago. Having moved from Madrid, Spain his 8th grade year, Jaime adapted quickly to his new home.

His first year at Christopher Columbus High School, Jaime started in accelerated courses and earned straight A’s throughout his freshman year. Over the next three years of high school, Jaime has taken a total of 13 Honors courses and 9 Advanced Placement courses. As if this accomplished was not impressive enough, Jaime has dedicated his spare time to competing in club soccer leagues over the last several years.

Inspired by his grandfather, Jeramy Passmore started his football career at the young age of nine. Jeremy has worked hard both in the classroom and on the field over the last 10 years. His hard work and dedication has paid off having received over 32 Division 1 football scholarships offers from various Universities.

While not performing on the field or in the classroom, Jeramy dedicate his time to the children in the community. As an active volunteer with Philip Simpson and his organization, "Ground Game Training" Jeramy teaches the youth of our community about life skills, football techniques while simultaneously offering academic support.
