Columbus Debate Has Strong Showing at CP Tournament

The Columbus Debate Team competed in the 4th Annual Miami-Dade After School Tournament hosted at Coral Park Senior High.

Twenty-four Explorers competed across four different events, with a number of students finishing with notable achievements. 

In Public Forum, the sophomore team of Matthew Monroy and Zakk Gilley finished undefeated with high speaker points to earn them a 2nd place finish. Also, going undefeated, the junior team of Gabriel Lafee and Daniel Volpe finished overall in 5th place. In Public Forum, they tackled the issue of the United States government selling arms to Saudi Arabia. 

In Student Congress, making his debating debut, sophomore Alexander La Roz finished in 5th place overall. Alex gave multiple speeches on a stacked agenda including Trump impeachment, renewable energy alternatives and other contemporary issues. 

The team will be competing at districts for varsity states this Saturday at Ransom Middle School. The team has a record high 37 students competing for a chance at the state championship across 8 different events.
