Debate Makes it to Elimination Rounds at Sunvitational

Over the weekend, the Columbus Debate Team varsity members competed at the Sunvitational tournament held at Nova Southeastern University.

The Lincoln-Douglas debaters competed in a field of 75 competitors representing, 21 schools, from 2 states. Junior Andrew Castro had a great run in preliminary rounds finishing with a 4-2 record and making it into the elimination rounds as the 24th seed. He lost on a close decision in the double-octa finals, but still picked up big wins against South Plantation, Cooper City, and West Broward High Schools.

Also competing over the weekend were senior Javier Hernandez and sophomore Pedro Portela. Javier had a big win against Miramar, while Pedro picked up wins against Nova and Fort Lauderdale High Schools.

The students were debating whether the United States should send military aid to authoritarian regimes.

The team next competes this weekend for a chance at the Colorado Cup in Mullen High School. We'll be traveling 10 debaters to Denver, visiting with debate teams at 3 different universities while we're there for potential debate scholarships, and competing in over six different debate events against 800 other competitors.
