Anglers Club Boaters Safety Course

This past Saturday, the Anglers Club, in conjunction with the Monica Burguera Foundation and the United States Coast Guard Auxillary, completed the club’s 4th Annual Boaters Safety Course.

The Monica Burguera Foundation was created in memory of Monica, a 20-year-old Florida international University student, who passed away in a boating accident during the 2006 Columbus Day Regatta.

The foundation sponsors the boater safety course and the gentleman of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary presents the course. The course is designed to bring awareness to boating safety in which each participant, once completed, is awarded the USCG Auxiliary Certificate of Accomplishment and a Florida Boating Safety Identification card.

The identification card is required to operate a boat for people born on, or after January 1, 1988.

A total of 26 students, four adults, and our very own counselor, Ms. Martinez, got the opportunity to sit in on this course.

Out of the four adults there were three alumni who also took advantage of learning about boating safety. Daniel Martinez '89, Luis Padron '83 and one of the Coast Guard Flotilla Commanders, who dedicated his time to present the course, Mark Burros'83.

This event marks the start of the Anglers Club multiple events for the 2018-2019 school year.
