Debate Team Lands Speaker Award

Over the weekend, the Columbus debate team competed in the Big Easy at the Holy Cross Invitational. The team had a great showing and came away with 16 wins and a top 3 speaker award.

Leading the way for the Explorers, Junior Andrew Castro was recognized as the 3rd best speaker at the tournament in the Varsity Lincoln Douglas division. Andrew placed behind last year's national champion, and the winner of the first major tournament of this year from Greenhill (TX). Andrew narrowly missed the elimination round by one ballot. The students debated the topic: Resolved: In the United States, reporters ought to have the right to protect the identity of confidential sources.

Also having a great showing Seniors Javier Hernandez, Andrew Capo, and Junior Carlos Gutierrez all finished one ballot short of elimination rounds with 3-3 records in LD Debate. Sophomore Christopher de la Viesca and Senior Charlie Gannon picked up some big wins throughout the weekend as well in the preliminary rounds. The LD Division had 50 entries competing from 19 schools, representing 9 states.

The team next competes this weekend at the Nova Titan Invitational in Davie, and continues competing for 4 more straight weekends till our mid season break in November.
