Ethan offers two separate, week long courses (see below). Both are informative and both are important in supplementing the information to make college writing as successful as possible. The first course is basically what was taught at Columbus, but would serve as a pertinent refresher. The second workshop is designed for supplemental essay writing, which is imperative for any student applying to private and/or out of state school's that typically require this type of essay. Please note, even if you cannot take these courses LIVE, they are prerecorded and available to you at any point in the summer!
1) One-Week Personal Statement Boot Camp - July 17-23. This course covers the creation of the Common App essay. Because these are already available to you, and because there are some of you who already have exposure to the writing expectation delineated by Mr. Sawyer, you could potentially already begin in tackling this task.
2018-2019 Common Application Essay Prompts
- Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
- Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
- Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
**As a source of reference, last years’ most popular prompt submissions were:
"Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth..." (23.6%), followed by the topic of your choice option (22.5%), and "Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful..." (21.4%).
2) How to Write Amazing Supplemental Essays - July 24 -28 covers Supplemental essays and how to create one that would best represent you to the colleges of your choice. It should be noted that by participating in these courses, you will have an intimate opportunity to train in the major steps to successful writing. The course would include outlining, brainstorming and final editing in writing college essays and because of the information you will attain, it is possible to finish EVERYTHING before senior year starts, giving you a multitude of advantages.
If you find the dates do not work for you because of prior commitments, recordings are available to you, after confirmed registration.
Typically, because of the value of these webinars, the cost runs at $297 per course, however, because we have partnered with Ethan Sawyer this year after experiencing, first-hand, the plethora of information he has for students, both courses have been offered to students at a $25 each using the coupon code COLUMBUS
This will be offered to all Columbus students (please feel free to pass this info along) and the choice of participation will be left to personal discretion, however, for rising juniors in the Mas Family Program (Scholars and Honors) this will be one of your expected responsibilities as a higher level learner.
