Columbus Debate goes to Washington

The Columbus Debate Team had a unique opportunity to debate gun control in the House Judiciary Committee in Washington D.C.

The event was sponsored by the National Speech and Debate Association and the non-partisan political action group Access Now. The Explorers were joined by 74 other students from 20 schools spanning 10 states.

The event was broken up into two sections, public debates and floor speeches. Columbus Debaters Andrew Castro (10th) and Javier Hernandez (11th) opened the public debate section of the program, by engaging in a debate about arming school teachers. Columbus joined forces with Nicevlle High School (FL) to go against Medina High (OH) and Sonoma Academy (CA). After the engaging debate, Marcel Van Hemert (10th) and Kevin Cejas (10th) gave floor speeches about American exceptionalism in our current gun policy.

Overall, it was incredible to be debating within the walls of the federal government just doors down from various representatives, and hearing students from all over the country come together to discuss the essential issue of gun law reform.
