Debate Team Wins Coral Park After School Tournament

The Columbus Debate Team participated in the 3rd After School Miami-Dade Tournament of the year hosted at Coral Park Senior. Overall we had 12 students competing against 7 other schools in the district.

Continuing our district dominance in Lincoln-Douglas debate, Junior Javier Hernandez was the only undefeated debater in the pool and finished in 1st place. Closely behind him was freshman Christopher de la Viesca who recently made the transition into LD after debating the first half of the year in the Big Questions circuit.

In Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Marcel Van Hemert came back to the squad to take away a second place finish overall in the tournament. Marcel met heavy competition from Miami Beach Senior and Michael Krop Senior High.

In Public Forum, the very unlikely duo of first time debaters seniors Issac Quijano and Justin Mendoza finished in 8th place in a large pool with a 1-1 record. Quijano and Mendoza were debating whether there should be limits on presidential war powers in the U.S.

The team next competes at the State Championship tournament this weekend at Timber Creek High School in Orlando.
