The Lapel Project at Columbus

Do you know what separates a suit from a tuxedo? Lapels, mainly.

Lucky for the Columbus community we have partnered with The Lapel Project, a product launched on Shark Tank by alumnus Sebastian Garcia ’00, for a fundraiser throughout the month of February. Explorers can order a custom lapel between now and February 20th and they will arrive in time for prom 2018. The most exciting part is if Columbus is the highest selling school, we will be featured on The Lapel Project’s Shark Tank update.

The Lapel Project turns any suit jacket into a tuxedo with their unique, customizable lapels and accessories. Some of their existing collections include sparkly New Year’s Best, colorful Tribal Hipster and festive holiday themes, such as vintage reindeer and patterned Santa. They also offer dapper prom options, in addition to lapel/bow tie sets.

Garcia originally appeared on “Shark Tank,” and asked for $150,000 for 20 percent equity. The sharks had their concerns, including Robert Herjavec seeing the products as gag gifts. Mark Cuban was the first and only shark to make an offer, which was quickly accepted after fashion guru Daymond John and QVC Queen Lori Greiner went out. Ultimately, Garcia left the tank with a $150,000 deal from Cuban at a 30 percent equity stake.
