EXPLORERS FINISH 2ND AT GMACS

The varsity wrestling team competed in the 34-team Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) Tournament held at Ronald Reagan High School this past weekend and came away with the 2nd place trophy after a hard-fought weekend. Thirteen Explorers out of the 14 weight classes competed well and advanced through Friday's rounds, which gave the team 1st place until the semifinals on Saturday, when eventual defending team champion South Dade surpassed us. Ten Explorers came away with individual medals at the end of the competition, along with the runner up trophy. Justin Valdes (11th grade, 113 lbs.), David Milton (11th grade, 138 lbs.), Ryan González (11th grade, 145 lbs.) and Henry Fernandez (12th grade, 220 lbs.) all finished as runner ups while Charles Huffman (11th grade, 120 lbs.) and Dylan Perez (11th grade, 285 lbs.) finished 3rd. Gavin Buck (9th grade, 106 lbs.), Sebastian Melguizo (9th grade, 126 lbs.), Ryan Doll (12th grade, 132 Lbs.) and Miguel Ortiz (12th grade ,152 lbs.) finished in 4th place, respectively. The last competition of the year before the District Tournament for the varsity will be this week end at Jupiter High School. The JV squad will compete in the JV County Finals at North Miami High School.
