Senior Debater Wins Top Speaker

Over the long weekend, the Christopher Columbus Debate Team returned from the winter break with an outstanding showing at the 10th Annual University School Sunvitational Tournament held at Nova Southeastern University.

Senior Lincoln-Douglas Debater and team president, Angel Toro finished the preliminary rounds undefeated with a 6-0 record and was ranked the top speaker of the tournament. Angel had an incredible tournament easily defeating the competition in his double-octo final, and octo-final, before losing on a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals. On his way to quarterfinals, Angel defeated debaters from Leon King (Tampa), Western (Broward), Cypress Bay (Broward), Carroll Senior (Austin, TX) and American Heritage (Delray).

Also competing over the weekend, senior Daniel de Izaguirre had some big wins against Trinity Prep and Nova while sophomore Jesus Capo had a win over Western. Novice and sophomore debater Andrew Castro also had a great weekend, competing in the varsity division of Lincoln-Douglas for the first time and coming away with wins against Nova and Cypress Bay. Overall, the team did well in a pool of 95 debaters spanning four states (NY, FL, AL, and TX).

The novice and JV squads next compete this weekend at Deerfield Beach High School, for the fourth South Florida Catholic Forensic League Tournament of the year.
