Columbus Grad Featured in Miami Herald

Recent Columbus graduate Jake Reis was featured in The Miami Herald for his ‘Do it in the Back Seat’ campaign.

A friend of Reis’ was ejected from the back seat of a car and nearly died and the Explorer knew he had to do something.

That ‘something’ was to start a YouTube campaign to try and change Florida’s seat belt law, which does not require passengers 18 and older to wear a seat belt in the back seat. Florida law requires passengers in the front seat to wear a seatbelt or be fined $30; the violation for a child not being properly restrained is $60.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 21,000 people died in car accidents in the United States in 2014. Of the 21,000, more than half of the teens (13-19) and adults (20 to 44) who died were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
