Record Breaking Night at Silver Knight Awards

Christopher Columbus High School is proud to announce that the class of 2017 had four winners and four honorable mentions awarded to Explorers at the 59th presentation of the Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards.

The program has honored more than 1,300 high school seniors for their academic excellence and extraordinary passion for community service. This year’s winners take home $2,000, 25,000 miles from American Airlines, a medallion and a Silver Knight statue. With the addition of this year’s four winners, Columbus has led Miami-Dade County with the most Silver Knight Awards for four consecutive years.

The caliber of young men that Columbus churns out every year is nothing short of amazing. Every day I am inspired by their commitment to academics and their passion to be true agents for change in our community, Mas Family Scholars Director and Silver Knight Coordinator Sylvie Galvez-Cuesta noted after the awards ceremony. I am humbled to walk a part of their journey with them, and have no doubt that for each of the nominees, this is only a first step in a lifetime of meaningful achievements.

2017 Winners include: Anthony Martinez (Digital & Interactive Media), David Sanchez (Mathematics), Kaelen Krumich (Vocational Technical) and Jose Cardelle (World Languages).

The four Silver Knight Explorers join a prestigious group including the founder of Amazon, the composer who wrote the score to Rocky, the first female U.S. ambassador in the Middle East and the former Surgeon General of the United States.

2017 Honorable Mentions include: Eduardo Llano (Athletics), Thomas Falcon (Business), Christopher Vazquez (English & Literature) and Danyel De Villiers (Journalism).

We are very proud of all 15 nominees from the class of 2017.
