Senior Explorer Wins Essay Contest

The National Constitution Center named Orlando Hidalgo the first-place winner in the 12th grade category of the Founding Freedoms Playwright Contest for his piece titled “A Republic, If You Can Keep It.”

Daniel Bravo finished in second place for his piece, "Dr. Franklin.”  Both senior Explorers attended a 3-day playwriting workshop in Philadelphia, which included historic tours with the foundation's team of historians and professional playwrights, directors, and performers.

For placing first overall, Orlando has been awarded $2,500 and his play will be performed live at the National Constitution Center by professional actors during the month of July. Daniel has been awarded $1,000 and has been given the opportunity to submit a final copy of his play.

The Constitution Center invited students in 6th, 8th and 12th grade to write an essay or play about the country’s founding freedoms.

We are very proud of both students for their impressive accomplishment and many thanks go out to National Social Studies Honor Society Moderator Mrs. Mary McCullagh for helping them through the process.
