Retreats

Relationship with God

As part of an Explorers’ holistic formation at Christopher Columbus, students have the opportunity to have retreat experiences. These experiences allow for a stepping away from day to day responsibilities in order to further build one’s relationship with God and neighbor. Retreats are offered at the freshman, sophomore, and upperclassmen levels and they build upon previous experiences. Explorers have the opportunity to attend:

Freshmen Year: Kerygma

This two day retreat offers participants the opportunity to discover Jesus by means of Scripture and Tradition in relation to God, himself, and others. Kerygma is "the Good News," it is preaching, it is proclamation and announcement with focus on Jesus, relationships, healing, personal call, and morality. Participants are introduced to the life of the saints by way of Saint Marcellin Champagnat. It is the duty of the Church to proclaim always and everywhere the Gospel of Jesus Christ. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Mt 28:19-20).

Sophomore Year: Serve

A two day experience based on the call to be men of faith, men of integrity, and men of honor.  St. Paul reminds us to imitate Jesus Christ: “So that it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. This life that I live now, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me.”

"Kerygma" introduces participants to break open the Word. "Men for God" leads the participants to break open the Good News in words and action.

Junior/Senior Year: Encounter

This two and a half day retreat invites the participants to experience the love of God, self, and other. The Encounter is rooted in the Cursillo movement with a series of talks, discussions, and activities that enable a participant to identify that he is created in God’s image and likeness. Focus is placed on the basics of Catholic Church teaching, and the human and divine Jesus as the way, the truth, and the light.
