Four Explorers Recognized for Service, Academic Excellence

We are very proud to announce that Columbus won two Silver Knight Awards and two Honorable Mentions at the 2020 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards held virtually on Thursday, May 28, 2020.

For the seventh year in a row, Columbus remains the top high school in Miami-Dade County with most Silver Knight Awards (16 Silver Knights and 14 Honorable Mentions in these years). Join us in congratulating the four Explorers recognized for their extraordinary passion for community service:
 
Silver Knight Winner: Lukas Guerra (Digital Media). He was accepted to FIU, MDC, Tallahassee CC and Santa Fe College. The senior will be attending Florida State University. He founded Media for Minorities and acted as the contributing producer to various PSAs and documentaries.
 
Silver Knight Winner: Alejandro Morles (Mathematics). He will be attending The University of Chicago as a Questbridge Scholar come fall. The senior Explorer’s service project was Warm Ears Warm Hearts, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that collected over 300 pounds of winter clothes and assisted over 40 families stay warm.
 
Silver Knight Honorable Mention: Patrick ‘Coco’ Silva (Athletics). He was accepted to the University of Colorado at Boulder, FSU and UM and will be deciding between the University of Notre Dame and University of Southern California. The senior co-founded Shower with Blessings and the Be the Light Club.
 
Silver Knight Honorable Mention: Marcel van Hemert (Social Science). He was accepted to FIU, University of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of South Carolina, SMU, Stetson and Tulane. The senior will be attending the University of Miami. He founded the Explorers Geography Bee and created its website.
