Three Explorers Honored at Silver Knight Ceremony

Christopher Columbus High School is proud to announce that three Explorers earned Honorable Mentions at the 2019 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards.

Daniel Gonzalez (Athletics) is the epitome of a student athlete. Having been a varsity athlete on the soccer team for 3 years and a Mas Scholars at CCHS member for the past four years, he is an example of excellence for all his peers. Daniel has received a perfect score of 36 on his ACT, is a national merit finalist, and recently became Columbus’ first ever recipient of the Morehead-Cain Foundation Scholarship - the oldest and most prestigious scholarship in the nation. Daniel is also the president and co-founder of PlayerToPlayer, a nonprofit which has partnered with over 20 organizations to collect used soccer cleats, misprinted uniforms, and other soccer equipment to be donated to recipients spanning across 3 continents.

Noah Defauwes (World Languages) set his sights on improving Haiti, a nation that has given him so much in terms of family, culture, and language, but is struggling to remain stable and is facing political, social, and economic strife. With the creation of Amour Pour Haïti, Noah partnered with Fondation J’aime Haïti, a foundation that provides aid to disfavored handicapped persons and children throughout the island nation. Noah held a backpack drive and fundraiser at his local community, obtaining a total of 150 backpacks for economically disfavored and handicapped children under the care of Fondation J’aime Haïti. Noah visited Institution Marthe Robin in the Canopé Vert region of Port-au-Prince, and personally distributed the backpacks to all the young children. With an interview from local Haitian radio show The Morning Drive, he has taken measures to secure funds for future donations in helping improve the impoverished state of the beautiful island nation of Haiti.

Victor Arechavaleta (Digital & Interactive Media) is dedicated to creating high quality digital media. The senior Explorer put countless hours into the Christopher Columbus News Network, where he was the executive producer and a newly minted national champion. Victor created various public service announcements and circulated them online via CCNN Live’s website and also through its daily morning show, which streams to the high school. He also shared all the content pieces via CCNN’s various social media channels. Next year, Victor plans to attend Florida State University to study communications.

Over the past 6 years, Columbus seniors have won 14 Silver Knights and 12 honorable mentions.
