Explorers Finish 3rd at FHSAA State Championships; Padilla Wins Double State Titles

The Christopher Columbus High School Track & Field program capped off an outstanding season this past weekend at the FHSAA State Championships in Jacksonville, earning a 3rd place overall team finish with 47 points, behind only Spanish River HS and Flanagan HS.

Battling through injuries and adversity throughout the season, the Explorers delivered one of their strongest performances of the year on the state’s biggest stage.

Leading the way was Gianluca Padilla, who captured State Championships in both the Discus and Shot Put. Padilla threw 48.91m (160 ft) in discus and 15.79m (51 ft. 9 in.) in shot put, becoming just the second athlete in school history to win both events at the state meet — joining his own coach, Mike Putman.

The 4x800 relay team of Lucas Gonzalez, Alexander Lopez, Christopher Lundin, and Adam Muchallah continued their historic season by breaking the school record for the second consecutive meet, running 7:47.43 and finishing 4th overall in the state.

The Explorers also recorded five personal records during the championship meet, including new personal bests in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Additional podium performances included:

  • Jack Norman placing 7th in the state in Javelin with a throw of 51.76m (170 ft.)
  • Alexander Lopez finishing 5th in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:54.4
  • Alec Cruz finishing 4th in the 200m with a personal-best 21.21
  • Diego Eseverri placing 6th in the 3200m with an outstanding 9:12, moving to #2 all-time in school history
  • The 4x400 relay team of Glasper, Braynon, Lopez, and Cruz finishing State Runner-Up in a thrilling race with a time of 3:14.35, missing first place by just .01 seconds

The season was a tremendous success for the program and a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and dedication of the student-athletes and coaching staff throughout the year.
