Congratulations to the winners of the 1st Annual CCNN Live Media Excellence Awards
which were held at Columbus on April 12, 2014.  At the event our student-led CCNN Live honored the TV news journalists that inspire them to produce and air quality programming.  Ten of the nominees were present at the ceremony as was Mr. Sal Cannella, CCNN founder, who was honored with a special award. The event was covered on several TV stations.

Faculty and Staff Join Together to Serve the Needy

During Lent, members of the administration, faculty, and staff donated food items and volunteered their time to prepare sandwiches and lunch bags for persons seeking assistance.  Over 600 lunch bags were delivered by the faculty to the Missionaries of Charity and to the Coconut Grove Outreach Center.  Jorge Guerra ('91), owner of the Sedanos store in Westchester donated  tge bread, peanut butter, and chips.   This project was part of the New Marists in Mission efforts which aim to motivate the school community to serve others.
The New Marists in Mission Committee was formed at Columbus to identify the needs of the adults that serve at Columbus, and offer experiences for the administration, faculty, and staff.  The committee is represented by various departments, age brackets, and number of years in service at Columbus:  Eyda Alegret - Religious Studies, Anneris Cedeño - World Languages, Andrew Chacon – English, Teresa Chomat - Science, Ana Fernandez – Staff, Gerardo González - Campus Ministry, Kenia González - World Languages, Br. Peter Guadalupe – Guidance, Br. John Healy - Guidance, David Isenberg - Visual and Performing Arts/Athletics, Pedro Marti - Religious Studies/Athletics, Wenceslao Ortega - Mathematics, Eric Pino - Social Studies, Maria Rams-Foyo - Mathematics, and Br. Drama Troupe Ranked Superior at State Thespian Festival

Bravo!  The Columbus Theater Troupe scored Superior (the highest score possible) in all 4 productions that they took to the Florida Thespian State Festival Competitions.  This an incredible achievement, especially because it is the first time Columbus Drama competed at the state level. Congratulations! to the students and to moderator Ms. Erin McGrath.

Thank you to Columbus Silver Knight Award Recipients Ralph Penalver ('69) and Joey Insua ('07) for visiting Columbus today and speaking to some of our 2014 Silver Knight Nominees and underclassmen who are interested in the program.   Ralph is holding his Silver Knight trophy which he received 45 years ago.  These alumni gave the group some great advice regarding this program which has become Miami-Dade County's most prestigious awards program for high school students. 

State Champion Soccer Team Honored by the Miami-Dade County Commission

The Columbus 2014 State Champion (Class 5A) Soccer Team was honored at the Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting on March 4, 2014.  Mayor Carlos Gimenez ('72) and Commissioner Javier Souto presented the team with a Proclamation and the team presented them with a jersey signed by all the team members. In addition to Head Coach Michael Stewart and Assistant Coach Gerardo Lewis, in attendace were the families of the players, Principal Br. Michael Brady, Assistant Athletic Director Butch Staiano, Br. Steve and Br. Julio, who started the soccer program at Columbus in the 1970s.  Congratulations again to Columbus' newest state champions!

Carlos Montalvan is chosen as a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition

Senior Carlos Montalvan was named Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  
Carlos is 1 of approximately 15,000 finalists that will continue in the 2014 competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million.   The nationwide pool of finalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants on the 2012 SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).   Congratulations Carlos!

Debate Team's College Tournament Victories Continue, placing 1st at the University of California

This has been a tremendous year for the Columbus Debate team, having had great succeess in several national university competitions.  After having placed in the top 10 at Princeton and taking the gold at Yale University tournaments earlier this year, CCHS debate brought home the championship in Public Forum Debate at the University of California Berkeley the weekend of February 14th.  

After 4 days of competitions, over 37 states and 6,000 entries to the tournament, Tyler Anderson and Joseph Corderi both juniors, placed first after going undefeated throughout the entire tournament and defeating Mountain View High School of Idaho in the final round. Tyler and Joseph are the first to win the Berkeley National Tournament in the history of the Columbus program. Among other Explorers to do well are Joseph Arocha and Noah Lopez, who went 6-1 and dropped in the double octo round, top 32 at the tournament. Congratulations to the team and the champions!

Science Fair Winners - Simon Tsaoussis Chosen for State/International Science Competitions for breakthrough project

Sophomore Simon Tsaoussis (pictured sitting at center) has been selected to compete in the State & International Science Fairs with his breakthrough project - "Two Transistor Ternary Random Access Memory." His invention, which he has a patent out for, has  the potential to increase the speed of computers by 5,000% or more.  Simon competed at the S. Florida Regional Science & Engineering Fair on February 8th where he received a Superior rating and brought home the  1) Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award; 2) ASM 's Award for Most Outstanding Exhibit in Material Science and 3) US Naval Academy Award for Excellent project in Computer Science. 

The following five students also brought home awards from the S. Florida Regional & Engineering Fair:
1. Sebastian Planas:   Project: Linear Magnetic Gauss Rifle-Superior Rating
2) Patrick Gatcliffe:  Project: Effect of Colorant on Lake Water Transparency and Dissolved Oxygen Concentration- Excellent Rating.  He received the University of Miami Rosential School of Marine Sciences Award for an Excellent Project in Ocean Currents.
3) Christian Capper:  Project: What are the Benefits of Green Roofs Compared to Traditional Roofs-Excellent Rating.  He received the I-SWEEP Award for an Excellent Environmental Project.
4) Thomas de las Casas:  Project: Long-tailed Macaques and Their Ability to Judge Relative Quantities-Excellent Rating
5) Mathieu Gomez:  Project: Disinfecting Wipes vs. Saline Wipes-Excellent Rating

As part of the celebrations taking place for Catholic Schools Week, the Columbus Jazz Band was asked to perform for the students of Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic School in Miami Gardens on January 29, 2014. 

Our students not only gave a great performance that the audience enjoyed but also spoke to the students about what it's like going to a Catholic High School.

Drama Troupe Competes at Districts for 1st Time & Places in all 9 Events

The Columbus Drama Club has joined the International Thespian Honor Society and is now a registered troupe in the state of Florida.  The team, comprised of 8 students, competed for the first time in district competition in December with 49 other schools and over 1200 students and phenomanely the Columbus Troupe placed in all of the 9 events that were held.  The troupe will be going to the state competition in March.

Scripture tells us “ask and we shall receive”, and receive we have. Thank you for your generosity to our annual Toy Drive.  All the toys collected along with the toys we have purchased with monetary contributions from the Columbus family will be distributed to several organizations such as Camillus House and the Missions of St. James and St. John Bosco.  Toys will also be provided to a day care center in Little Havana and several needy families connected with our school.

Columbus Debate is the only team to place in top 10 at Princeton Classic

Columbus brought home top honors from the 2013 Princeton Debate Classic at Princeton University in December. Among 25 states and over 4,000 students, Michael Ortega and Nicholas Anderson placed within the Top 10 in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Columbus was the only team to place in the Top 10 in the nation from the state of Florida. In September, the team took the Gold at Yale University's national competition.  Congratulations to the Columbus debaters!

Columbus is proud to announce the launch of the new video series “Explorer Talks” which features alumni giving advice and speaking about their personal journeys to career success.    Watch Jose Mas (Class of ’89; MasTec Inc. CEO) in the 1stvideo of the series .

The Explorer Talks Video Series was produced by CCNN Live (the Christopher Columbus News Network) in collaboration with film-maker Marc Altieri (’07). CCNN Places 3rd in Nation and Wins Several State & District Titles

South Florida History Bowl Quarter Finalists

The Columbus History Team competed at the South Florida History Bowl and placed 6th out of 25 schools.  They have qualified to compete at the National History Bowl in Washington D.C. in April of 2014.  The students who participated are pictured above L-R with Br. Students Raise $2,000 for Get Smart Bimini

Six Columbus students participated in the "Get Smart Bimini" Program this year, raising $2,000 for school supplies for needy Bimini students.   Robert Sanchez (CCHS class of '13) started this organization while attending Columbus and now his younger brother Michael Sanchez is leading the effort.  "Education is the key to the future and we want to help our friends here in Bimini," said Michael.  The police in Bimini helped the project greatly by assisting the students to distribute the materials.  The GET SMART BIMINI program will receive an official thank you later this year from the island's administrator. "We welcome and encourage any act of good-will between people," said Adminstrator Oscar Munroe. "The friendship that this group has shown to the young people of Bimini is commendable," he added.   The six CCHS students who particpated are: Michael Sanchez ('14), Cesar Llano ('17), David Sanchez ('17), Mike Fernandez ('17) Martin Lopez ('14),  and Francisco Suarez ('14).  They are picture above left to right with Bimini Police officers.

Golf Team Wins Regional Title, Advances to State Finals

The Columubs Golf Team won the Class 3A (Region 8) Team Title on October 21st, defeating 8 other teams to advance to the State Finals.  Junior Julio Betancourt led the way with a one under par 71 and also took home the individual regional title. Sophomore Rafa Martinez shot a +2 74, senior Juan Yumar shot 75 and senior Eddie Martinez shot 75 as well.    Go Explorers!

Gabriel Seiglie Featured in Article about "Catholic Scouting"

Junior Gabriel Seiglie, a Mas Scholar who is active in campus ministry at Columbus, was recenlty featured in an Archdiocese of Miami article about "Catholic Scouting."  Gabriel has been a cub scout for 10 years and recently participated in an event for pastors and principals to raise awareness about what scouting can do for individuals and communities.  He is quoted as saying "I'm encouraged through the scouting program to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, the prime example of both servitude and leadership."  READ ARTICLE

USA Water Polo Names 5 Columbus Explorers Academic All Americans

Columbus water polo players Julian Gonzalez, *Nick Anderson, *Steven Dawson, *Tyler Anderson and *Mario Muxo 
were awarded Academic All-American for their achievements in the water and in the classroom by the non profit organization, USA Water Polo.  A total of 622 outstanding achievers nationwide were awarded.  The Columbus team had four of the eight outstanding achievers in all of Florida. Student athletes need a 3.6 GPA on a scale of 4.0 to qualify as an Academic All-American and those that received a 4.0 GPA are honored as Outstanding Academic All-Americans.  

At CCHS, these boys led the water polo team while finishing in first place in the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) and third place at districts.  Congratulations!

Columbus has been chosen as a “Safe Sports School 1st Team” by The National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is 1 of only 2 high schools in Florida who have been awarded with the recognition.   This honor not only acknowledges the vital work of the Columbus Athletic Training Department, led by Br. Columbus Debate Takes the Gold at Yale University's National Competition

The Columbus Debate Team gave an outstanding performance at Yale University's National Debate Competition, held the weekend of September 20th, 2013.  After 3 days of competition, with representation of over 20 states and 3,000 competitors, Columbus Debate brought home the gold!  Senior Nicholas Anderson won the Lincoln Douglas Debate and was awarded a bid to the Tournament of Champions.  He is now listed among the top 8 debaters in the nation (and he is the only debater on this elite top 8 list from Florida).  Michael Ortega also competed into elimination rounds at the tournament, strengthening and solidifying Columbus as one of the premier debate programs in the nation.

Nicholas also won the 4thannual Bulldog Invitational at Braddock High School, bringing home 1st place overall in Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Carlos Montalvan is a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program

Senior Carlos Montalvan was named as a Semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. 

Carlos is 1 of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists that will continue in the 2014 competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million.   The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants on the 2012 SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Josh Cantor, the new Director for the Bernhardt Wellness Center at Columbus, has recently started a new blog entitled "Explorer Fitness" with the goal of keeping the Columbus family informed on the most up-to-date information regarding exercise, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles.  Included in his blog, in addition to his expert advice, are all types of articles and motivational quotes.  Mr. Cantor is a certified personal trainer and holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology and Psychology from the University of Miami.  VIEW THE EXPLORER FITNESS BLOG HERE

CCNN's Former Anchor Tomas Benach Chosen as a top 10 national finalist by the NSPA

Congratulations to the Christopher Columbus News Network (CCNN) and Tomas Benach ('13 - former Sports Anchor)! 

Tomas has been selected as one of the top ten finalists (of more than 1000 entries in the nation) for the National Scholastic Press Association's High School Broadcast Sports Story of the Year.  This was CCNN's first submission into national competition and is a huge accomplishment for the program.

Sophomore Cesar Santalo Honored at Marlins Stadium for Academics & Sportsmanship

Cesar was awarded the Miami Herald and Marlins Spotlight Award on August 16th right before a Marlins/Giants game.  The award recognizes young people in the community for their academic achievements in the classroom and for their sportsmanship.  Congratultaions Cesar!

Blessing Ceremony Held for the All Sports Fitness Complex & Wellness Center

On August 10th Columbus held a blessing and dedication ceremony for its new All Sports Fitness Complex and Bernhardt Wellness Center.  Most Reverend Fernando Isern blessed the first floor of the facility and Br. Coach Greg Villareal Wins Professional Men's Volleyball Championship as Ass't Coach

CCHS Football Coaches and player Tucker Beirne Participate in Team USA Football

In July,  Columbus Head Football Coach Chris Merritt, Columbus RB Coach Andy Aviles, and Junior Tucker Beirne participated in Team USA’s U17 Development Games at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.  Tucker was voted the flag bearer and Coach Merritt served as  the head coach of the White Team which was comprised of high school football players from 23 states.  The games were non-scoring exhibitions to prepare the team for international competition.  Coach Merritt also gave tackling clinics (in Tampa and Jacksonville) to youth football coaches from throughout Florida as part of a new initiative called “Heads Up Football” sponsored by the NFL and USA Football to promote safer tackling.

Castaways Against Cancer Set to Embark on 6/8 - Support the Crew made up of 5 alumni

On June 8th the Castaways Against Cancer will embark on their 14th Annual Kayak Journey from Key Biscayne to Key West to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  To date, they have raised over $400,000 for the organization.  The five Columbus alumni participating in this year's trip are:  Luis de la Aguilera, Patrick Linfors, Steve O'Brien (founder current CCHS teacher), Eric Pino (CCHS teacher) , and Adam Scholer (CCHS teacher).

The students listed below and pictured above were commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion during Mass on Thursday, May 16th.  Parents, students, faculty, and administrators were present in support of the students.  The students participated in an Archdiocese of Miami training session for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, which was led by Fr. CCNN Sweeps State Journalism Competition for a 2nd Consecutive Year

CCNN (the Christopher Columbus News Network) is once again a state champion team, winning 21 overall awards at this year's FSPA journalism convention, including 3 first place awards in the On the Spot Competitions.  Andrew Briz was once again awarded Top Anchor in the state and very impressive was their honorable mention for a Suncoast Television Emmy, an accomplishment that is almost unheard of for a high school publication. CCNN is also rated Gold by the Florida Scholastic Press Association. Congratulations to all the students who participated and to moderators Mr. Delgado and Mrs. Hidalgo.

Faculty and Staff Join Together to Serve the needy

During Lent members of the administration, faculty, and staff donated food items and volunteered their time to prepare sandwiches and lunch bags for persons seeking assistance.  Over 600 lunch bags were delivered by the faculty to the Missionaries of Charity and to the Cocunut Grove Outreach Center. George Guerra '91, the owner of the Sedanos in Westchester also donated the bread.  This project was part of the New Marists in Mission efforts that aim to motivate the Columbus school community to serve. 
The Marists in Mission Committee was formed at Columbus to identify the needs of the adults that serve at Columbus, and offer experiences for the administration, faculty, and staff.  The committee is represented by various departments, age brackets, and number of years in service at Columbus:  Eyda Alegret - Religious Studies, Anneris Cedeño - World Languages, Andrew Chacon – English, Teresa Chomat - Science, Ana Fernandez – Staff, Gerardo González - Campus Ministry, Kenia González - World Languages, Br. Peter Guadalupe – Guidance, Br. John Healy - Guidance, David Isenberg - Visual and Performing Arts/Athletics, Pedro Marti - Religious Studies/Athletics, Wenceslao Ortega - Mathematics, Eric Pino - Social Studies, Maria Rams-Foyo - Mathematics, and Br. Andrew Briz Wins Dow Jones News Fund Competition, Receives College Scholarship

Over the summer of 2012, junior Andrew Briz, the current president of CCNN (The Columbus News Network) attended a journalism workshop at the University of Miami.  As part of the workshop, he created a video about the Cuban-American vote in the 2012 election that was entered into the Dow Jones News Fund’s Summer Workshops Competition.  The organization notified Andrew that he was  one of eight winners that were chosen from across the country.   

As a winner, a  $1,000 college scholarship has been reserved in his name which he can apply towards tuition/room and board expenses at the college of his choice for the 2013-2014 school year.  In addition, the DJNFC  will  re-publish his work in the “These Struck Our Fancy”  section of their newspaper for high school journalism teachers and on their website.
