How to Guide and Advise Your Senior
The senior year is when everything your son has done over the last 3 years comes together and life altering decisions are made. It is the year in which students see the rewards of their hard work and planning
Have your son take the first ACT and SAT of the school year. Take a look at the scores from last year and determine what scores are necessary for his admittance into the college/university of his choice. If your son is hoping to be accepted into a selective college program, or if he is applying for scholarships, test scores will be very important.
Continue to monitor academic progress. Students may believe that senior grades are not important and will not be seen by college counselors; this however is not true! Colleges often ask for copies of first semester grades and always end of the year final transcripts.
Help your son set up a calendar/time line for the school year. Use this calendar to record test dates, application deadlines, college fairs, career day, college visitations, etc.
Obtain and complete the college application in the fall. Your son must obtain the college application from either his college counselor or directly from the university. You may also complete the college application on-line.
Complete financial aid and scholarship application forms. The four categories of financial aid are grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. Grants and scholarships are considered “free money,”
