CCHS Football Coach Merritt Led Team USA to Win the World Championships

Columbus Head Football Coach Chris Merritt helped coach the International Federation of American Football’s Team USA to win the Junior World Championship. This inaugural tournament took place from June 27th - July 5t at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio and consisted of players aged 19 and younger from eight countries, spanning four continents.
The second-seeded U.S. team defeated top seed Canada 41-3 in the Gold Medal Game before a crowd of 15,473 fans.
Coach Merritt was one of nine coaches that were selected for the team back in September, 2008. He was the Defensive Backs Coach and the Special Teams Coordinator. He had the pleasure to have coached one of his 2008/09 Columbus team players on Team USA, Erik Lora (CCHS class of 2009) who will be playing football for Eastern Illinois University this fall. Lora made a 34-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter in the final game.
