FRESHMAN YEAR

010 English 9 — Honors — Phase 4
This course is intended to develop further the exceptionally advanced college bound students and is, therefore, limited to those students who have demonstrated superior academic ability and background via testing and overall past academic records. Individual study, research and project preparation in a collegiate fashion are required.

011 English 9 — Phase 3
This course is intended to develop the academic and life skills of college bound students in an accelerated environment. It includes content for exploratory reading and appreciation of literature, written and oral communications, language tools, listening/speaking skills and vocabulary growth. Opportunities to enrich the program for the accelerated learner are also employed in a separate, modified tangent program.

012 English 9 — Phase 2
This course is intended to develop basic content for exploratory reading and appreciation of literature, language toools, listening/speaking skills and vocabaulary growth. 

013 English 9 — Reading Workshop — Phase 2
This course is required of selected students in English 9 in addition to their English 9 course during their freshman yea.  It is designed to develop in concentrated fashion the reading/study skills requisite for success in the general courses of instruction and beyond via individualization for specific needs. This course is an integral part of the overall English/academic curriculum.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

020 English 10 — Honors — Phase 4
This course in World Literature is intended as the second step for the students who took the English 9 Honors course. Intense class and individual study, research and project preparation in collegiate fashion are required
Prerequisite: Superior academic performance in English 9 and teacher recommendation.

021 English 10 — Phase 3
This course is designed to develop the student's ability to communicate more effectively. The areas of communication stressed are: reading, writing, and listening/speaking. The primary tool is the World Literature text supplemented by vocabulary and grammar texts. The outside reading program concentrates on the major genres of literature with a multicultural flavor paralleling the selections in the textbook.

022 English 10 — Phase 2: College Prep
This course is designed to continue and to extend verbal skills, the appreciation of literature, and the skills of oral communication. The program includes strong emphasis on the tools of language: vocabulary, grammar, inference reading, work-study techniques, and test taking procedures.

JUNIOR YEAR

030 AP English Language and Composition - Phase 5

This course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers. By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effective writing. The college course often allows students to write in a variety of forms—narrative, exploratory, expository, argumentative—and on a variety of subjects from personal experiences to public policies. The main objective in most first-year writing courses is to enable students to write effectively and confidently in all their college courses and in their professional and personal lives.

031 English 11 — Honors — Phase 4
This course is for students who completed English 9 and English 10 Honors courses. Students are expected to complete outside readings at a more accelerated pace. Emphasis is placed on discussion revealing authors' background, themes, techniques and styles with an attitude of both appreciation and criticism. Comparisons of many authors’ works are prepared. Mechanics and techniques of research papers are used in student assignments. English grammar and vocabulary enrichment are included in the course. Prerequisite: Superior academic performance in English 10 (phase 3 or 4), strong evidence of ability to handle more challenging concepts, a recommendation from the present English teacher.

032 English 11 — Phase 3
This course entails the discovery of the universal themes that have engrossed Western man and motivated American literature. The student applies literary analysis to readings in and beyond the basic text for a deeper understanding of literature. Composition and vocabulary are also emphasized in advancing the student's verbal and writing skills.

033 English 11 — Phase 2
This course is designed as a basic survey of the development of American literature. The course especially intends to continue the growth of essential skills in reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing.

SENIOR YEAR

040 English Literature — Advanced Placement — Phase 5 — Dual Enrollment
This course is for students who completed English 9, 10, and 11 Honors/Phase 4 courses, have excellent academic records, and have the recommendation of their present English teacher. In this course the student learns how to read works of literature perceptively and expresses his responses to them. Through reading, writing and listening/speaking, the student becomes more aware of nuances in the use of language and develops his own ability to express himself clearly and effectively. The broad reading selections in the course are taken from novels, short stories, plays, poems, and essays which demonstrate a mastery of our language, particularly in British literature. This course should be considered by students who do well in English, History and Languages and who have an interest in those subjects. Through the AP English Examination or dual enrollment, students may receive college credits.
Prerequisite: PSAT verbal score of 50 or higher.

041 English 12--- Phase 4
This course in writing and reading British literature develops language skills through extensive contact with literary masterpieces of our language.  Through reading, writing and listening/speaking, the student becomes more aware of the use of the language and develops his ability to express himself clearly and effectively.  Prerequisite:  Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

042 English 12 — Phase 3
This course uses British literary selections to emphasize some of the specific dilemmas facing men: the relationship of man to his fellows, his state, his urbanized environment, and his God. The selections are intended to augment the student's mind and vision and incite in him an expanding of reason and imagination. Literary discussions and written analyses are also integral elements of the course.

043 English 12 — Phase 2
This course is designed as a basic survey of British literature and how it presents mankind in relation to his society, his environment, his God and himself. The course continues the development of basic skills in English.

045 The Age of Shakespeare - Phase 4 - One Semester

This course is designed to study in-depth the literature of the English Renaissance. The focus would be on the works of William Shakespeare and the lesser degree those of Ben Johnson, Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe.  Students would learn to interpret the works through both historical perspective and literary criticism.

*Prerequisite:  3.0 GPA in Phase 4 English 11

046 SAT Writing Prep - Phase 3 - One Semester

This course will help the students to further develop his expository writing skills.  Some students may be required to take this course based on examination results.

051 Creative Writing — Phase 3/4—One Semester
This course is designed to enhance and improve writing skills. Special emphasis will be placed on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and various writing styles. Students will use a variety of techniques to develop their writing ability, including brainstorming, prewriting, and proofreading. Weekly assignments as well as daily drills and exercises will be given. Examples of effective and poor writing styles will be provided. A major individual creative writing project will be assigned to judge improved writing ability. This course is also offered as an honors, phase 4, class for students of proven achievement whose GPA is 3.0 or higher.

052 Journalism —Phase 3—One Semester
This is an elective course for juniors and seniors who want to explore the fundamentals of producing a newspaper. Journalism, writing styles, field reporting, photography, editing, and layout are considered. In addition to classroom assignments, students are responsible for the production of the school newspaper, The Log.

053 Yearbook 1/2 - Phase 3 - One Semester

These courses will prepare the students to use yearbook software to create the Columbus yearbook. The topics covered include:  layout design, copywirting and formatting.  Before and/or after school lab time may be required.

054 Applied Writing - Phase 3 - One Semester
This course is and elective for juniors and seniors who want to receive instruction and practice writing in the following areas: cover letters/editorials, college admissions essays, grant proposals, technical writing, advertising copy, on air news stories with CCNN.

060 Speech — Phase 3 — One Semester
This elective course is an elective for juniors and seniors and is designed to provide the student with the ability to have the "power of the spoken word." Emphasis is placed on preparing and presenting speeches and essays, short stories, poems and other creative forms. The techniques of academic research are also elements of the course.

061 Comparative Studies - Phase 4 - One Semester

This course will expose students to a variety of artistic forms and appropriate vocabulary with a primary focus on their impact and relationship to the world we live in.  Students will make comparisons and critical commentary through several essays and group workshops.

062 Drama 1 — Phase 3—One Semester
An elective for seniors and juniors in play production, this course will include both the study and the practice of acting, scenic design, lighting, sound, costume design, makeup, and scripting. The course will require afternoon and evening sessions. The course fulfills fine arts requirements.
*Prerequisite: interview with audition and permission of the instructor.

063 Drama 2 - Phase 3 - One Semester

This course is designed for the Advanced Acting and Technical theater student.  Students will work together to produce, build a set and perform a full length drama production on Columbus' Main stage.  They will continue the workshop throughout this process to build skils in the areas of improvisation, Voice and Movement for the stage.
